Towing a trailer in bad weather means planning around three hazards that stack on each other: crosswinds that can shove a high-profile trailer across a lane, rain that roughly doubles your stopping distance, and grades where any loss of traction or braking turns a routine descent into an emergency. The good news is that a 10-minute forecast review, a few honest limits, and some smart timing around mountain passes will handle most of it.
Reading the Forecast Before You Hook Up
A typical weather app shows temperature and a rain icon. That's not enough for towing. You need wind gusts, precipitation timing, and how conditions shift along the route — not just at the start point.
Check at minimum:
- Sustained winds and gust speeds for every corridor you'll drive through, especially open plains, river valleys, and exposed ridges.
- Hourly precipitation chances and amounts, not just a daily percentage.
- Timing of thunderstorm or snow development — afternoon convection in summer and frontal passage in winter are the two patterns that ruin tow-day plans.
- Air temperature at altitude if you're crossing a pass — a wet road at 35°F is ice.
Look at the forecast the night before and again the morning of departure. Conditions can change enough in 12 hours to flip a "go" into a "wait."
Crosswinds: Know Your Trailer's Envelope
There's no single legal crosswind limit for towing. A small empty utility trailer handles wind very differently than a loaded 30-foot travel trailer or a 13-foot tall horse trailer. What's safe depends on your trailer's height, side surface area, weight, and how far back the load sits from the tow vehicle.
A general rule of thumb: sustained crosswinds above 25–30 mph deserve caution with any tall or lightly loaded trailer, and gusts above 40 mph are when most recreational towers start feeling the trailer get pushed. Empty or lightly loaded trailers are usually worse in wind, not better, because the trailer's weight isn't pressing the tires down into the pavement.
Warning signs on the road:
- Semi-trucks pulling over or running well below the speed limit.
- Visible haze of dust or blowing rain crossing the road at a sharp angle.
- The trailer's rear end drifting in your mirrors even at steady throttle.
If the wind picks up mid-trip, slow down — drop 10–15 mph below your normal tow speed — and steer in small corrections rather than big ones. Crosswind gusts hit hardest at the moment you cross a bridge, overpass, or wind gap in the terrain; expect a shove there. If gusts are severe, find a wide exit, a rest area, or even a parking lot, and wait it out.
Rain: Wet Roads and Trailer Braking
Wet pavement roughly doubles a passenger car's stopping distance, and a trailer adds its own rolling mass that the tow vehicle has to control. Most "I nearly jackknifed" stories happen in the rain, not the snow.
Adjust your following distance. Whatever gap you leave in dry weather, multiply it. If you normally run 4 seconds behind a car, leave 8–10 seconds in steady rain and more in heavy rain. Your trailer brakes will lock before your tow vehicle's, especially on slick paint, leaves, or manhole covers.
Use a trailer brake controller properly. Set the gain so the trailer brakes come on slightly before the tow vehicle brakes. If you hear the trailer tires skid, the gain is too high or the surface is too slick — back off the controller and downshift instead. Many modern controllers have a manual slide that lets you apply just the trailer brakes for sway events; learn how yours works before the rain starts.
Watch for standing water. Hydroplaning on a trailer is the same physics as on a tow vehicle, but the trailer can hydroplane earlier because it has less weight over its tires, especially if it's lightly loaded. Stay out of the ruts truckers leave in heavy rain — that water is deeper than it looks.
Mountain Grades: Wind, Weather, and Downhill Speed
Mountain passes combine all three hazards: stronger and gustier winds on the ridgeline, weather that changes from one side of the range to the other, and long descents where brake overheating is a real failure mode.
Time the pass carefully. Mid-morning is usually the calmest window — after overnight inversions have settled and before afternoon thunderstorms build. In winter, this also avoids the worst black-ice window right after sunrise. If the forecast shows a frontal passage or a thunderstorm complex crossing the range, leave early to be over the summit before it arrives, or wait until it clears. Don't try to outrun a cell you can see building over the peaks.
Use the engine, not just the brakes, on long descents. Downshift to a lower gear before the grade steepens and let engine braking carry most of the deceleration. Riding the brakes on a 5–10% grade for several miles overheats them; brake fade on a trailer is how people end up in runaway-truck escape lanes. Wind on the grade behaves differently than on flat ground. Wind gets funneled and accelerated through canyons and over saddles in the ridge, often in unexpected directions. A south wind at the bottom of a pass can become a crosswind or even a headwind at the top. Expect surprises at the summit and the first mile down the lee side.
Pre-Departure Checklist for Bad-Weather Towing
- Check tire pressure on the tow vehicle and trailer, including the spare.
- Verify the trailer brake controller gain at low speed in an empty parking lot.
- Confirm all running lights, marker lights, and brake lights work — others need to see you in rain.
- Top off washer fluid and check wiper blades.
- Stow a rain jacket, gloves, and a flashlight in the cab — you may be outside in wind and rain adjusting straps or hitches.
- Save the offline forecast for your route on your phone in case cell coverage drops in the valleys.
