About WeatherRuta
What is WeatherRuta?
WeatherRuta is a free road trip weather planner that shows you weather conditions along your entire driving route. Enter a starting point and destination, and WeatherRuta calculates your route, samples key waypoints along the way, and matches each stop with the weather forecast for when you are most likely to arrive.
Use the time slider to shift your departure time and instantly see how conditions change throughout the day — no repeated searches or waiting for new data.
How It Works
1. Enter your route
Type in your origin and destination using street addresses, city names, or well-known landmarks. WeatherRuta uses OpenStreetMap geocoding to find your locations.
2. Route calculation
Your driving route is calculated using OSRM (OpenStreetMap Routing Machine). WeatherRuta then samples 8–12 key waypoints along your route, spaced roughly every 75 miles or 90 minutes.
3. Weather forecasts
For each waypoint, WeatherRuta fetches 48 hours of hourly weather data from Open-Meteo, including temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and weather conditions. The forecast is matched to your estimated arrival time at each stop.
4. Explore with the time slider
Drag the time slider to change your departure time and see how weather conditions shift along your route. All calculations happen instantly in your browser using the cached forecast data.
Data Sources
WeatherRuta is built on trusted, open data sources:
- Weather data: Open-Meteo — free, open-source weather API with global coverage, updated hourly from multiple national weather services.
- Routing: OSRM (OpenStreetMap Routing Machine) — fast, open-source routing engine based on OpenStreetMap road data.
- Geocoding: Nominatim — OpenStreetMap's geocoding service for converting addresses to coordinates.
- Maps: MapLibre GL JS — free, open-source map rendering library with OpenStreetMap tiles.
Privacy First
WeatherRuta does not require an account, does not track your trips, and does not store your personal route history. Route data is processed in real time and never saved to our servers. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.
Tips for Best Results
